The New Kenya Planters Co-operative Union (New KPCU) and the County Government of Nyamira have sealed a new partnership to breathe fresh life into coffee farming in Nyamira County, signaling renewed efforts to restore the crop as a cornerstone of the local economy.
The agreement, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on Tuesday, April 28 at New KPCU headquarters, brought together key leaders from both institutions. Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo led the county delegation, accompanied by members of the County Executive Committee and other senior officials.
New KPCU was represented by its Chairman Daniel Chemno and Managing Director Timothy Mirugi, alongside other officials, in what stakeholders described as a landmark moment for the region’s agricultural sector.
The partnership outlines a multi-pronged strategy aimed at tackling longstanding challenges facing coffee farmers in Nyamira. Central to the initiative is the establishment of certified coffee nurseries and the distribution of high-quality seedlings, measures expected to improve both yield and crop resilience.
In addition, the collaboration will focus on strengthening farmer knowledge through capacity-building programs and agronomy support, ensuring growers are equipped with modern farming techniques.

Access to subsidized fertilizer; facilitated through the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB)—is also expected to lower production costs and enhance productivity.
Another key pillar of the agreement is the modernization and revitalization of coffee cooperative societies, which have historically played a crucial role in Kenya’s coffee value chain but have struggled in recent years due to mismanagement and underinvestment.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Governor Nyaribo emphasized the county’s commitment to restoring coffee farming as a viable and profitable venture for local farmers. New KPCU officials echoed this sentiment, highlighting the organization’s broader mission to support coffee growers across the country.
The partnership reflects a shared vision of empowering farmers, boosting output, and re-establishing coffee as a major economic driver in Nyamira County. If successfully implemented, stakeholders say the initiative could serve as a model for similar collaborations in other coffee-growing regions of Kenya.
As global demand for high-quality coffee continues to grow, the renewed focus on strengthening production at the grassroots level may offer a timely opportunity for Nyamira’s farmers to reclaim their place in the market.
