Lamu West farmers, cooperatives get Ksh 12.4 million boost under FSRP inclusion grants

Farmers and cooperative societies in Lamu West Sub-county are set to transform their agricultural operations after the County Government of Lamu disbursed over Ksh 12.4 million in inclusion grants under the Food Systems Resilience Program (FSRP), marking a significant step toward strengthening food security in the region.

Lamu Governor Issa Timam presided over the phase one disbursement to cooperatives and Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOS) across several wards. In Mkomani Ward, one cooperative received Ksh 700,000 to support its operations and boost agricultural productivity. In Hindi Ward, a cooperative group and multiple SACCOs collectively received Ksh 1.7 million to expand capacity and improve service delivery.

Speaking at the Hindi Command Centre during the launch, Governor Timamy reaffirmed the county government’s commitment to empowering grassroots agricultural institutions, saying the grants would play a central role in improving food security and household livelihoods across Lamu West.

Agriculture County Executive Committee (CEC) Member James Gichu urged farmers who had not yet registered to do so, noting that registration was the gateway to accessing funding opportunities and public support programmes. Gichu confirmed that the current disbursement represents phase one of the FSRP rollout, with phase two expected to reach additional beneficiaries in the coming months.

The Food Systems Resilience Program targets cooperatives and SACCOs as key vehicles for strengthening agricultural value chains and building resilience within local food systems.
