Busia County Bodaboda riders yesterday received a major boost after Governor Paul Otuoma in the company of distinguished guests, presided over a Riders Empowerment Initiative that doubled as a major harambee, bringing together over 2,000 bodaboda riders.
According to the organisers, the initiative focused on smart insurance solutions, enhanced security awareness, financial literacy, and practical strategies to boost local economies while uplifting youth engaged in the bodaboda sector.
Speaking during the event, the Governor noted that the program targets thousands of young people earning a living in the vibrant industry. “These initiatives are designed to transform informal hustles into recognized, secure, and profitable enterprises, while integrating riders into the broader national development agenda,”Otuoma said.
He added that the structured approach supported by contributions from various leaders during the day’s harambee will enable riders to access business loans, improve financial stability, and build a more cooperative relationship with law enforcement by addressing minor compliance issues amicably.

The Permanent Secretary for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Susan Mang’eni, urged riders to form Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs), noting that the funds raised, form a strong foundation for formalization and financial empowerment within the bodaboda sector.
It was also revealed that sector leaders are rolling out a comprehensive registration drive to create a reliable database of riders, aimed at enhancing both security and organization within the industry. Riders are further being supported to form and strengthen SACCOs to improve savings and access to credit.
Interior PS Dr. Raymond Omollo also talking during the event, highlighted that beyond the transport sector, Busia County is poised for industrial growth through the ongoing establishment of a modern County Aggregation and Industrial Park. He noted that the facility will be a game changer for the border region by promoting local manufacturing and value addition, while creating thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities for the youth.
“To support this growth, major upgrades to the region’s transport network are underway. Key among them is the proposed extension of the national railway line to Kisumu and onward to the Busia border, a move expected to enhance trade efficiency by enabling faster and more cost-effective movement of goods, while easing pressure on road infrastructure.” Dr. Omollo said
