PS Hinga: affordable housing ownership protected beyond 2027 elections

Housing PS Charles Hinga addressing the Public Accounts Committee in the past

Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga has assured Kenyans that beneficiaries of the Affordable Housing Programme will retain ownership of their homes, regardless of which government comes into power after the next elections.

On Thursday, June 18, Hinga dismissed claims from the opposition suggesting that houses acquired under the programme could be repossessed following the 2027 General Election.

The PS said the programme is legally protected, assuring that individuals who purchase homes under the initiative will be recognised as rightful owners, with their property rights safeguarded against any future government interference.

“How do you take away their houses? These are homeowners and homeowners by right. Any homeowner who wants to buy these houses should do so confidently,” he said.

Hinga was responding to remarks by some opposition leaders who have reportedly warned Kenyans against buying houses under the programme, claiming that the units could be repossessed in the event of a change in government.

He dismissed the allegations as misleading and politically driven, accusing critics of using the housing project to advance their own electoral interests ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Hinga urged prospective buyers to disregard the claims and continue with their applications for housing units, assuring them that the law protects both the programme and the investments of homeowners.

The PS further reiterated that no government can lawfully repossess homes acquired through due process, emphasising that beneficiaries should engage in the programme with confidence.
