  • SEZA Chairman Fred Muteti says women empowerment is reducing reliance on shylocks.
  • He urged women to continue saving through chamas and table banking.
  • The initiative supports women’s access to finance, markets and sustainable livelihoods.

As the government continues empowering women through the women economic empowerment initiative, chairman Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA) Fred Muteti has said it has come at the right time to relieve women from shylocks.

“You see, recently and in the past women have been living in fear. They acquire a loan and when time for payment comes, maybe cannot afford the payment, resulting to shylocks who overcharge them in terms of interest in their desperation. They kept on hiding for fear of auctioning of their property. Now that’s a thing of the past with the women empowerment initiative,” Muteti said.

Muteti was speaking during a women empowerment economic meeting at Katangini, Kalawa ward, Makueni county. He added that women are the best when it comes to saving and merry-go-rounds, encouraging them to continue without any stress since the empowerment initiative helps the women continue benefiting themselves by taking loans within their groups, which will still continue benefiting them.

The empowerment framework focusses on grassroots economic participation and sensitisation, including financial inclusion through table banking and chamas.

“The empowerment is focusing on creating sustainable livelihoods, access to markets, and financial support for women groups, as well as making sure the women thrive socially and economically,” Muteti said.
