The Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) has dismissed documents circulating on social media as false, unverified and misleading, urging farmers, shareholders, financiers, business partners, regulators and the public to disregard the information.

According to KTDA, the documents deemed false contain information concerning its financial affairs, loans, governance, and the conduct of various individuals and financial institutions associated with the company.

The company said the copies in circulation do not bear the signatures, official stamp or the authentication necessary for KTDA to establish their authenticity.

It added that it is irresponsible for individuals to circulate such documents as authenticated official reports or use them to draw conclusions about KTDA, its directors, management, financiers and other shareholders.

In a statement issued on August 19, the company said that as the country nears the general elections, public institutions and their leaders can become targets of political campaigns, misinformation and personal interests. It stated that political interference and other personal interests should not be allowed to interfere with the professional, commercial and governance affairs of KTDA.

The company called upon relevant authorities to investigate the circulation of protected information.

“We call upon the relevant authorities to investigate any unlawful acquisition, alteration, publication or dissemination of protected information and take appropriate action where violations are established,” read part of the statement.

KTDA reassured all its financiers, banks, suppliers, investors and other business partners that it values the relationships it has built with them over many years.

It urged all tea farmers and shareholders to rely on information communicated through official KTDA channels and through the established governance structures of their factories.

KTDA acknowledged that public institutions and commercial organisations may periodically face scrutiny and criticism. However, it said the scrutiny must be based on facts and authenticated documents.

KTDA calls upon all named individuals, companies, financial institutions, regulators, their shareholders, tea farmers and members of the public to remain calm and to exercise restraint.
