Butere groups receive Sh5m in Kakamega social grants

  • Butere groups receive Sh5 million to boost income generating activities.
  • The grants target women, youth, widows and persons with disabilities.

Women, youth, persons living with disabilities and widows in Butere Sub County received Ksh5 million under the Social Protection Grants Programme aimed at boosting local enterprises and improving livelihoods.

The funds benefited 100 groups spread across the sub county’s five wards. Each ward received Ksh1 million, which supported 20 groups. Every group received Ksh50,000 to invest in income generating activities.

The Butere disbursement forms part of a wider Ksh60 million Countywide Social Protection Grants Programme.

Governor Fernandes Barasa, urged the beneficiaries to use the grants responsibly. He said the money should go towards viable ventures that can generate sustainable incomes for members.

The governor added that the grants complement other County Government empowerment initiatives. These include affordable financing available through the Kakamega Microfinance Corporation, which supports groups and enterprises that outgrow the initial grant.
