- Kilifi Saccos receive Ksh30.5 million to expand farmer financing.
- Government links cooperative funding to new irrigation opportunities.
- Stronger Saccos are expected to improve market access and farmer incomes.
Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mutahi Kagwe has handed over Ksh 30.5 million to eight local savings and credit cooperative organisations (Saccos) in Kilifi County to strengthen farmers’ access to financing.
The funding was announced during Kagwe’s visit to Bamba, where he also launched the Ksh 79 million rehabilitation of the Ndigiria Water Pan, a project aimed at expanding irrigation and boosting food production in the area. The financial empowerment component was included alongside the water project to support farmers who will benefit from the new irrigation scheme.
PS for Cooperatives Development Patrick Kilemi said stronger cooperatives would help farmers aggregate their produce, access markets and financing and negotiate better returns.

The Sacco funding forms part of the government’s broader strategy to expand agricultural water infrastructure through large scale irrigation projects, dams, community water pans, river water harvesting and deep boreholes. The strategy seeks to capture and store water when it is available and use it to support food production throughout the year.
