Business owners at Ruiru Bypass stage in Kiambu County woke up to devastation on Wednesday, September 2, after a fire tore through the trading centre in the dead of night, razing stalls and wiping out merchandise built up over years of hard work.
Blaze struck under cover of darkness
The inferno is understood to have broken out at around 3 a.m., catching traders and residents off guard while the area lay dormant. Officials are yet to confirm the precise time the fire started, and no formal account of how it began has been released.
Accounts from the ground suggest the blaze did not stop at the market. Nearby homes and businesses in the Kwa Kairu area reportedly also bore the brunt of the fire, drawing in residents who rushed toward the flames in a scramble to save what they could before help arrived.
Firefighting effort leaned on residents
Only one fire engine was reported at the scene, meaning much of the early firefighting fell to ordinary residents armed with whatever they could find to douse the flames. Calls went out for reinforcements as the fire proved stubborn, underscoring what has become a familiar complaint in fire emergencies across the country: response capacity that struggles to keep pace with the scale of the disaster.

Fortunately, no deaths or injuries had been reported by the time of writing, although Wednesday’s fire had yet to receive an official casualty statement from authorities. Investigators have also not pinned down what triggered the blaze, though early, unverified suggestions point to one of the stalls as the possible starting point.
Second dawn fire in weeks to hit the region
Wednesday’s tragedy is the latest in a string of dawn fires that have swept through parts of the wider Nairobi metropolitan area in recent weeks. Just over a week earlier, on Sunday, August 23, residents of Marurui in Nairobi County faced a similar ordeal when a fire gutted several homes before sunrise, leaving families without shelter.
In that incident, video footage circulating from the scene showed residents scrambling with buckets of water in a desperate bid to contain the flames, a scene that has become disturbingly familiar.
Marurui residents also claimed that the county fire brigade, despite being stationed less than 10 kilometres away, took long to arrive, a complaint that has fuelled frustration over emergency preparedness in the region.
