Kenyan coffee growers pocketed a combined USD 6.05 million after Sale 38 of the 2025/2026 season closed at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE) on Tuesday, September 1. Fourteen marketing agents moved 14,919 bags, translating to 925,891 kg of coffee, in what turned out to be a strong showing for the season.

Prices swing wide, but averages hold firm

Converted at the prevailing exchange rate of Ksh129.40 to the dollar, the day’s trading was worth roughly Ksh783.02 million. Buyers paid an average of USD 326.77 for every 50kg bag on offer, though individual lots told a very different story: some fetched as little as USD 60.00, while the best-performing bags commanded USD 434.00.

AB grade leads the pack, AA commands top dollar

Volume-wise, nothing came close to matching AB, which made up 6,038 bags, or 40.5 per cent of everything sold. Buyers valued it at an average of USD 363.56 per bag, pushing its total worth past USD 2.69 million. Grade C trailed behind with 4,052 bags, just over a quarter of the market, selling for an average of USD 330.78 per bag.

Despite moving only 1,029 bags, it out-earned every other major grade on a per-bag basis, averaging USD 373.59 and bringing in USD 489,058.30 overall. Further down the rankings, T, UG1, PB and UG2 rounded out the sale with 907, 896, 567 and 573 bags respectively.

New KPCU tightens grip on the auction floor

Once again, New Kenya Planters Co-operative Union PLC (New KPCU) came out on top among marketing agents, moving 4,605 bags weighing 284,658 kg, close to a third of the entire sale. Its coffee brought in USD 1.81 million at an average of USD 317.26 per bag, with individual lots ranging from USD 72.00 to USD 402.00.

Trailing New KPCU were Alliance Berries Limited, with 3,351 bags, and Kirinyaga Slopes Coffee Brokerage Company Ltd, with 2,384 bags. Meru County Coffee Marketing Agency Limited, KCCE Marketing Agency Limited and Coffee Estates Bourgeoisie Brokers Limited rounded out the top performers, handling 789, 695 and 685 bags respectively.
