Elgeyo Marakwet County residents owning land in arid sections of Kerio Valley have been urged to invest in groundnut farming to boost their income. The farmers have also been advised to form a sacco to enable them save and obtain loans to improve their livelihoods.
Speaking to Sacco Review in his office, Elgeyo Marakwet County Agriculture and Livestock CEC, Shadrack Yatich, said his department has partnered with some Non-Governmental Organizations to ensure that groundnut farmers in Soy South Ward, Keiyo South Sub-county receive the best quality seeds in order to enhance production of the crop.
“We are calling upon the farmers to put more effort on the groundnut farming. This is one of the crops that we as County Government are trying to put more focus on through partnership with Non-Governmental Organizations to aid in research on the suitable variety,” Yatich observed.
“We will address issues related to production, storage, processing and marketing of the groundnuts locally and overseas,” he added.
“Farmers will have the best certified seeds that will give high yield,” he said and urged them to embrace the use of modern technology to increase profit margins.
