Kenya and Malawi are strengthening cooperative sector ties through a learning visit on best practices and shared experience.
The engagement follows a visit by a Malawi delegation led by Jacinta Chipendo from the Department of Small and Medium Enterprises (DSMEs) and Cooperatives, under the Ministry of Industry, Business and Trade (MoIBTT).
Principal Secretary Patrick Kilemi welcomed the delegation, saying the visit offers Kenya and Malawi an opportunity to learn from each other and strengthen their cooperative movements.
Focus areas for the exchange
Discussions are focusing on cooperative governance, member empowerment, enterprise development and building sustainable cooperative businesses. According to Kilemi, the exchange will let both countries share approaches that improve cooperative performance and deliver benefits to members.
Cooperative governance ranks among the key focus areas, with the engagement expected to promote effective management of cooperative organisations.

Both sides are also exploring ways to empower members to participate actively in their cooperatives while benefiting from enterprises the movement has established.
Enterprise development is expected to play an important role in talks on how cooperatives can build sustainable businesses, create opportunities and improve members’ livelihoods.
Such exchanges, Kilemi said, strengthen the partnership between Kenya and Malawi and demonstrate the value of learning from one another. Sharing knowledge and experience, he added, can help build a stronger, more resilient and inclusive cooperative movement.
Ultimately, the learning visit is expected to deepen cooperation while improving practices and building stronger organisations that serve members and communities.
