- Banking industry launches a new institute to strengthen professional skills
- New partnership brings together banking and monetary policy expertise
- Training will cover emerging areas shaping the future of financial services
The banking industry has launched the Kenya Bankers Association Institute (KBAI) to strengthen skills and professional development in the sector.
Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Governor Dr Kamau Thugge presided over the launch. It coincided with the signing of a collaboration agreement between KBAI and the CBK Institute of Monetary Studies (CBK-IMS). The deal covers joint training, professional certification, knowledge sharing and research.
The partnership pairs KBAI’s industry expertise with the regulatory and monetary policy expertise of CBK-IMS. As a result, the two institutions now have a framework to develop and deliver training programmes. These will respond to the changing skills needs of banking professionals and the wider financial sector.
Under the agreement, they will jointly develop and deliver short, modular programmes focused on industry needs. Topics include credit risk management, risk and compliance management, treasury management and leadership.
In addition, the programmes will cover emerging areas. These include artificial intelligence and machine learning in financial services, cybersecurity and digital resilience, and virtual assets and financial innovation. Others are data protection and digital governance, climate risk and sustainable finance, and financial inclusion.

The collaboration will also support the development and implementation of certification for banking professionals in Kenya. CBK-IMS will provide training and capacity building programmes and bring regulatory expertise. KBAI, on the other hand, will lead curriculum development, examinations, participant registration, certification and professional membership.
Furthermore, the two will work on an East African Community Banking Certification Programme. A joint technical working group will oversee the initiative. They will draw on their respective subject matter experts and facilitators to deliver agreed programmes. KBAI may use CBK-IMS facilities for those programmes, subject to availability and applicable requirements.
KBAI is the academic arm of the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA), the banking industry umbrella body. It was established to support the development of competent, ethical and future ready professionals in banking and financial services.
Its work includes professional training, certification and examinations, and continuing professional development. It also covers member development, advocacy and research. Moreover, it gives banking professionals access to conferences, workshops and professional forums that keep their skills current.
