Agoro Sare learners craft solutions for farmers

Learners at Agoro Sare High School in Homa Bay County have developed two farm technologies, showcased at the Kaimosi Agricultural Expo 2026, to tackle crop losses and high farming costs.

The learners have developed two technologies targeting crop losses and the high cost of farm operations, attracting attention at the expo.

One of the inventions, “Sparrow,” is a robotic bird control device designed to protect wheat and rice farms from destructive quelea birds. The machine detects the birds, scares them away and can spray deterrent chemicals, offering farmers an automated way of protecting crops.

The second invention is an Automated Solar Powered Water and Seed Sower Machine, which combines several agricultural operations. It can undertake ploughing, harrowing, seed dispensing and covering, irrigation and fertiliser application.

The solar powered machine is intended to reduce the amount of labour and time required in farming, while lowering production costs. It also incorporates a security coding system that allows users to programme its operations and prevent unauthorised use.

The projects were developed by Agriculture and Biology teacher Danielle Winyo, working with learners Godwins Ouma and Vincent Omwamba, under the leadership of Chief Principal Dr Isack Okeyo Ogol.

The innovations were also showcased at the 2026 Kenya National Science and Engineering Fair, highlighting the practical application of science, agriculture and technology skills acquired by learners.

The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) sponsored Agoro Sare’s participation at the Kaimosi expo, providing the learners with a platform to display their inventions to farmers, researchers, educators and other stakeholders.

KICD Chief Executive Officer Prof Charles Ong’ondo has urged schools to become centres of innovation by developing solutions to challenges affecting communities.

Meanwhile, the school is also being encouraged to pursue intellectual property protection for the inventions, with the Kenya Industrial Property Institute advising it to register the technologies to safeguard the innovations and create opportunities for future development and commercialisation.

The Agoro Sare projects provide a fresh demonstration of how competency based learning can connect classroom knowledge with practical community problems, particularly in a country seeking to improve agricultural productivity and food security.
