More than 3,000 farmers in Machakos County on Friday received agricultural grants worth over Ksh70 million in form of assorted fertilizers, foliar feeds, pesticides and other farm inputs to boost coffee production from Machakos County governor Wavinya Ndeti.
The beneficiaries were drawn from Mukuyuni, Kakuyuni and Kambusu Coffee Cooperative Societies situated in Kathiani, Kangundo and Matungulu sub-counties respectively.
“We have been able to procure assorted agrochemicals and fertilizers for our farmers in this region. We are today giving out 1,650 bags of fertilizers to farmers,” she said.
Mukuyuni Coffee Cooperative Society had earlier received an enterprise development grant worth Ksh10 million and contributed an additional Ksh4.3 million towards the project.
They used the funds to connect power, renovate and paint the receiving bay, construct a water tower and install water tanks.
To improve on the drying process, the farmers added 80 more modern metallic drying beds and installed a modern security system with three solar security lights.
A pulping disk and a huller for were also part of the key installations that were made.
The other two cooperative societies also received similar support with Kakuyuni receiving Ksh16.5 million and Kambusu receiving Ksh27 million.
Governor Ndeti encouraged the farmers to take advantage of the ongoing rains to also plant trees in order to curb the effects of climate change.
