Kenya has reinforced its standing as a leading force in Africa’s cooperative movement following the election of Macloud Malonza as Chairperson of International Cooperative Alliance Africa(ICA-Africa).
Malonza, who also serves as Chairman of Co-operative Bank Holdings and Chairman of the Co-operative Alliance of Kenya (CAK) secured a decisive victory during elections held by the Cooperative Federation winning all 65 votes cast by delegates from across Africa.
His landslide win saw him defeat candidates from Cooperative Federation of Nigeria Lawrence Bale and Ojo Oladayo Aindehinde.
The unanimous endorsement by delegates underscored widespread confidence in Malonza’s leadership credentials and his vision for advancing the cooperative movement across the continent.
Malonza is also serving as the Vice President of ICA-Africa, he was elected in 2024.
CAK described the outcome as a strong vote of confidence in Kenya’s cooperative model and its growing influence in shaping the future of the sector in Africa.
Malonza’s election is expected to strengthen collaboration among cooperative organizations across African countries while promoting policies that support inclusive economic growth, financial empowerment, and sustainable development through cooperative enterprises.

The appointment also marks a significant milestone for Kenya’s cooperative sector, which is widely regarded as one of the most developed in Africa.
As Chairperson of ICA Africa, Malonza is expected to spearhead initiatives aimed at expanding the impact of cooperatives across the continent, fostering innovation, and enhancing the role of cooperatives in addressing economic and social challenges facing African communities.
The International Cooperative Alliance Africa (ICA-Africa) is the regional office for Africa of the global ICA, representing, uniting, and serving member organizations across the continent. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, it promotes autonomous and viable cooperatives while strengthening their role in development.
ICA is a non-governmental Cooperative Federation representing the Cooperative Movement worldwide.
It unites cooperatives worldwide and is the custodian of Cooperative values and principles. International Cooperative Alliance-Africa (ICA-Africa) is one of the four regional offices of ICA that serves unites and represents ICA member organizations in Africa by promoting and strengthening autonomous and viable cooperatives through capacity building and policy advocacy for the socio-economic benefit of its members.
