EPRA adds Sh4.10 per unit to October electricity costs

  • Electricity consumers face fresh cost adjustments in October.
  • EPRA has announced changes affecting monthly power bills.
  • Households and businesses could feel the impact differently.

Electricity consumers in Kenya face higher power costs in October after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced monthly adjustments that add approximately Ksh4.10 per unit consumed.

The adjustments comprise a fuel energy cost charge of Ksh3.22 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), a foreign exchange fluctuation adjustment of Ksh0.87 per unit and a water resource management levy of Ksh0.0134 per kWh.

In notices dated October 9, 2026, EPRA indicated that the foreign exchange adjustment applies to meter readings taken in September, while the fuel energy cost charge and water resource management levy apply to October readings.

The fuel charge reflects costs associated with fuel used in thermal power generation and electricity supply, while the foreign exchange adjustment accounts for currency-related costs in the power sector. The water levy supports the management of water resources used in hydropower generation.

The additional charges mean households and businesses could pay more depending on their electricity consumption, adding pressure to household budgets and business operating expenses.

For consumers, the impact will vary with the number of units used, alongside other applicable components of their electricity bills.
