Family Bank chairman dies three weeks after being appointed

Family Bank’s newly appointed board chair, Architect  Francis Gitau Mungai, passed away three weeks after taking over from the retiring Wilfred Kiboro.

The Family Bank board of directors and management issued a statement regarding Gitau, who passed away while undergoing treatment in the United States.

“Family Bank Board of Directors and Management regrets to announce the death of our newly appointed Chairman Architect Francis Gitau Mungai, who passed on while receiving treatment in the United States,” said the board.

Architect Francis Gitau Mungai has been a member of the Family Bank Limited Board since 2016, serving as Vice Chairman for the past two years before his recent elevation to Chairman.

He served as the chair for both the Board Credit Committee and the Board Human Resource Committee.

Additionally, he was an active member of the Nominations and Governance Committee and served as a director of Pesa Pap Digital Ltd, a subsidiary of Family Bank Ltd.

Architect Francis Gitau Mungai had been associated with the Family Bank Board since 1996, initially as a customer and later as an architect. His contributions during his tenure significantly impacted the bank’s growth.

“He made invaluable contributions to the growth of the Bank, and he will be missed immensely by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. On behalf of the entire Family Bank fraternity, we would like to convey our sincere and most heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the architectural community during this difficult period,” the board added.

Before beginning his stint with the lender in 1996, Mungai had supported the Bank both as a customer and as an Architect according to the board, and during his employ, made invaluable contributions to the growth of the Bank.

He had extensive experience in architecture and contract management, spanning more than three decades.

Architect Francis Gitau Mungai, a founding partner of Aaki Consultants, Architects, and Urban Designers, also held leadership positions with well-known firms like Triad Architects in Nairobi and Urban Innovation Group (UIG) in Los Angeles.

He held a Master’s Degree in Architecture from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and graduated with First-Class Honors in Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Nairobi.

About a month ago, Family Bank appointed Architect Francis Gitau Mungai as the incoming Chairman of the Board, subject to regulatory approvals. He was slated to take over from the retiring Wilfred Kiboro, who had successfully led the bank since 2012, navigating challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2016 banking crisis.
