In a transformative shift from daily subsistence to long-term wealth creation, boda boda operators in Githurai in Kiambu County have pledged to intensify their savings and investment portfolios. This commitment, aimed at boosting economic stability and uplifting the local community, was unveiled during a high-profile consultative meeting attended by Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi and various regional leaders.

The forum brought together representatives from several wards, including Mwea, Wendani, Sukari, Kiu, and Mwiki; highlighting a unified front among the transport sector’s stakeholders.

To professionalize their operations, the riders’ associations have moved away from traditional cash-handling methods in favor of digital accountability. By utilizing mobile money platforms and dedicated M-Pesa paybill numbers, the groups have effectively neutralized the risk of embezzlement.

“We have transitioned to a structured contribution system where funds are deposited directly into a central account,” explained one of the group leaders. “This transparency ensures that every shilling is accounted for, giving members the confidence to pool larger resources for major projects.”

This disciplined financial approach is already yielding significant dividends. The groups reported the successful acquisition of a land parcel valued at approximately Ksh 9.4 million. Some of the early investors noted that plots initially purchased for Ksh 74,000 have seen substantial capital appreciation, proving that collective bargaining and real estate investment are viable pathways out of poverty for the youth.

Beyond financial gain, the boda boda sector is positioning itself as a cornerstone of social reform. The groups highlighted several community-focused achievements such as skill acquisition where over 850 young people from across the sub-county have been sponsored for professional driving courses and licensing

The group has also financed over 20 motorcycles for members, with an additional six units slated for delivery before the end of the year, through the Asset financing programme achieved via their Savings and Credit Cooperative (SACCO) structures.

The group too has unveiled a boy child mentorship where youth leaders proposed a new initiative targeting boys aged 11 to 19. The program aims to raise Ksh 200,000 to host seminars focused on life skills, responsibility, and navigating adolescence.

“When you empower the boy child, you secure the future of the entire community,” a youth representative remarked, emphasizing the need for positive male role models in the informal sector.

Governor Kimani Wamatangi lauded the operators for their organization and foresight, reaffirming the county’s commitment to providing seed funding and technical support. He encouraged the riders to maintain their integrity and continue expanding their investment horizons.

Former Ruiru MP Esther Nyambura Gathogo also praised the initiative, noting that the integration of healthcare projects and transport sector SACCOs is creating a more resilient local economy. She urged the operators to maintain a collaborative relationship with the county administration to ensure the sustainability of these programs.

The meeting concluded with a call for unity, as leaders urged riders to remain disciplined in their SACCOs to protect their hard-earned investments and continue acting as a driving force for economic empowerment in Kiambu County.
