Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has made a commitment to assist Jua Kali Saccos in strengthening and expanding their businesses.

Bii emphasized the importance of the sector in the country’s economy, highlighting its crucial role in creating jobs, providing opportunities for self-employment and making a significant contribution to poverty reduction and wealth creation.

“Jua Kali artisans’ expertise and specialization in various skills has continued to propel them to produce innovative and cost-effective solutions for the community,” he noted.

He was speaking during Eldoret North Jua Kali Sacco’s special general meeting held at the Bishop Delany Memorial School, where he acknowledged challenges faced by traders such as informality, limited access to finance and business development services, low wages, and lack of social protection.

“With a membership of over 300, the cooperative society has witnessed numerous success stories of individuals who have transformed their lives and established thriving businesses. As a county, we are committed to providing support to further enhance their operational growth,” the Governor affirmed.

‘Jua Kali’ translates to ‘hot sun’ in Swahili and is used to refer to the informal sector of traders and small business owners who ply their trade on the streets or in open market spaces.

It encompasses a diverse group of artisans with a wide range of skills including carpentry, metalwork and welding, shoe repair, tailoring, automobile repair and plumbing among many others.
