Kakamega: Farmers get Sh25m milk cooler

By Titus Wafula
Dairy farmers in
Mumias East Constituency
will start
experiencing a massive turnaround
in milk production
following government’s intervention
aimed at preventing
losses occasioned by lack
of preservative equipment.
Mulembe Dairy Co-operative
Society (MDCS) has received
a Sh25 million 3,200
litre milk cooler from Ministry
of Agriculture through
Kakamega County Director
of Co-operatives, Nathan
Mukhweso.
Farmers have in the past
complained that lack of milk
preservative equipment has
led to a milk glut.
Speaking at Shianda Polytechnic
when he received the
cooler, area MP Benjamin
Washiali said the facility will
increase milk sales.
He said the cooler will
seek to increase purchase of
milk from small-scale farmers
and generate value addition
for production of yoghurt,
geese, fresh and sour
milk for commercial sale.
The MP said the Society
which collects around 200
litres a day should motivate
small-scale farmers to increase
their supply to 500
litres to kick-start operation
of the cooler.
He disclosed that the
Constituency Development
Fund (CDF) office had allocated
Sh3.5 million towards
construction of a cooler room
and purchase of a generator
to taking care of power outages.
