SACCOs have been urged to embrace prudential regulatory frameworks by working closely with African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA) and Policymakers to strengthen SACCOs Regulation for financial stability and also unlock their full potential as engines of inclusive economic transformation in Africa.

This was arrived at during the official close of the 15th Africa 2025 Africa SACCO Regulatory Roundtable in Addis Ababa, Federal Republic of Ethiopia, where 18 countries had convened.

Key resolutions during the 2025 roundtable meeting include Review of Regulations; the ACCOSCA is committed to exploring innovative regulatory approaches that reflect current trends and emerging challenges and opportunities across the movement to foster a resilient and thriving African SACCO sector.

The associations are also concluding on the Credit Union Model Law in Africa.

Credit Unions in Africa were encouraged to adopt ESG Reporting since the Risk is prevalent in the current credit union movement.

Through the launch of the Global Data Initiative by ACCOSCA and the World Council of Credit Unions, Countries in Africa now have a golden opportunity to share quality, reliable, and verifiable data. Further, ACCOSCA has prioritized the production of an Annual report, which will be tabled in Accra, Ghana, during the 2025 SACCA Congress.

On sustainable growth strategies, ACCOSCA has called upon credit unions in Africa to leverage mergers as a sustainable growth strategy geared towards building strong, resilient SACCOs. As such, ACCOSCA will provide a White paper on Mergers and Policy Guidelines on an Annual Basis.

Credit Unions have also been encouraged leveraging technology as a driver for compliance at the grassroots communities in Africa

The 2025 Africa SACCO Regulatory Roundtable was preceded by a pre-event training on Compliance and supervision, which accentuated the urgent need for harmonization of compliance and supervision practices across regional economic communities and building a culture of governance and accountability.

ACCOSCA reiterated its commitment to championing prudential regulatory frameworks to build a future where every shilling in a SACCO is in a safe, stable, and financially sound.
