Kitui County Housing Cooperative Society eyes real estate growth with member-focused development plans

The Kitui County Housing Cooperative Society Limited was started out of felt need by the Kitui County government staff in 2014. The society’s Chairman, Benjamin Musili Mukulo, further said the society is to be a world class housing cooperative society in the provision of real estate property services to the members for both the present and the future.

“Its mission is to acquire land for its members for real estate development and other related ventures. And the society’s main objectives were to consider and acquire and relinquish land, buildings and associated rights by either purchase, lease or any other means as may be necessary for the attainment of society’s objects,” Mukulo added.

The cooperator was speaking to the members during their society’s special annual general meeting recently. The event took place at the Kitui Resort Hotel in Kitui Town where the Kitui County Cooperatives Director Sammy Kasanga Musomba was the event’s chief guest.

“The society is to provide its members with living accommodation and associated services within the area of its operation at a fair and affordable price together with additional services such as accessibility, drainage system, water and electricity connectivity,” Mukulo said. He also said the society is to raise funds by accepting deposits and contributions from the members and enter into contracts and agreements with relevant institutions in furtherance of the society’s objectives.

The society is to achieve the objectives set out in the society by-laws and perform functions of a housing cooperative society as governed by the Kenya’s cooperative societies Act, the cooperator added.

Mukulo said the society is registered according to the Kenya’s co-operative society’s Act Cap 490 section 6(3) and section 31c (ii) of the society by-laws.

The society is governed by a seven-member elected management committee backed up by three elected supervisory committee members, according to him. Mukulo disclosed that the society currently has a total of 136 members. And he added that the society is open to all interested in investing on land and real estate including the public servants in both the national and county governments upon payment of a non-refundable registration fee of some one thousand shillings.

“The share contribution of the members is normally deposited directly to the society’s account by the individual member. The bank deposit slip is the key accounting document as proof of the membership and share contribution,” Mukulo said. “The management committee members are also the society’s office bearers. The committee was set up by electing members who are Benjamin Mukulo (Chairman), Dominic Mumbu (Vice Chairman), Emmanuel Kalunda  (Secretary), Jullie Sanganyi  (Treasurer), Bridget Mutemi  (member),  David M. Silu  (member), Josephat Maluki (Supervisory Committee Chairman), Francis Kea  (Supervisory Committee Secretary) and Angeline Ndue (Supervisory Committee member),” the society leader added.

“The Kitui County Housing Cooperative Society Limited since inception has purchased some 8 acres of land which in three land parcels and 53 members out of                              136 registered members have each received a land parcel plot within the Kitui Town Municipality. Each plot measures 50 feet by 100 feet appropriate for residential development,” he added.

On his part, the chief guest Sammy Kasanga Musomba, highly lauded the Kitui County Housing Cooperative Society Limited members for their development programme. “Forming a workers’ cooperative is a very good idea. This is a new concept. The members are benefitting from the housing they get more ownership in the long run,” Musomba said.

The officer urged the cooperators  to observe the cooperative laws for them to comply with the legal provisions. Musomba said that the cooperative management committees must meet monthly to discuss the issues about their cooperatives. “The department will organize a training to capacity-build the committees on governance and leadership,” said the director.

The Kitui County Housing Cooperative Society Limited Vice Chairman Dominic Mutisya Mumbu, the society’s Secretary Emmanuel Kalunda and the society’s Treasurer Jullie Sanganyi also addressed the occasion among others.
