Some women’s groups from across Kitui County have benefitted from water tanks, catering equipment, motorcycles, tents, and chairs worth millions of shillings, donated by the Kitui County Women’s Representative, Dr. Irene Muthoni Kasalu.
The donation ceremony took place recently at Kauwi Primary School in Kitui West District within Kitui County. The Makueni County Women’s Representative, Rose Museo Mumo, was the chief guest at the event.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Irene Muthoni Kasalu disclosed that she had provided water tanks to over 1,000 schools in Kitui County. She added that her vision is to provide a water tank to each household in the county. She also announced that over 500 homesteads in the county had benefitted from water tanks provided by her.
Kasalu encouraged local women to form community-based organizations (CBOs) to benefit from these donations, as the water tanks are being given to CBOs. “We want to empower these CBOs through tents, water tanks, catering equipment, and motorcycles, among other items,” she said.
“I will continue providing water tanks to the women in Kitui County,” the women’s leader added. “There are a lot of things that my office has done for the Kitui people,” Kasalu said. She went on to explain that the Girls of Hope Initiative was started in Kitui County immediately after she took office as the Kitui County Women’s Representative in August 2017. Kasalu is the second Kitui County Women’s Representative, following Winfred Nyiva Mwendwa, who served as the first representative from 2013 to August 2017.
“There are over 200 children from Kitui County who are benefiting from my office’s scholarships. I have scholarships in my office,” said the Kitui County Women’s Representative. “What I want is to serve my Kitui people and see my work before 2027,” Kasalu added. She expressed her gratitude to the locals for electing her as their county women’s representative for two terms.
