The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is set to introduce an advanced digital system that will automatically detect inconsistencies and fraudulent tax returns, marking a major step in its plan to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into tax administration.
The new automated validation system, which will be integrated into the iTax platform, is scheduled to go live in January 2026.
It is designed to flag mismatches in income declarations, VAT claims, and withholding data, allowing KRA to verify taxpayer information against third-party sources in real time.
In a statement issued on Friday, KRA said the initiative is part of the government’s broader tax modernization agenda aimed at enhancing efficiency, transparency, and voluntary compliance.
“Effective 10 January 2026, the system will begin validating income and expenses declared in both individual and non-individual income tax returns against the following data sources: TIMS/eTIMS invoices, Withholding Income Tax gross amounts, and import records from Customs systems,” read the notice.
Taxpayers will now be required to ensure that all declared income and expenses are supported by valid electronic tax invoices correctly transmitted with the buyer’s PIN, where applicable. Exceptions will only apply as provided under Section 23A of the Tax Procedures Act, Cap 469B, and the Tax Procedures (Electronic Tax Invoice) Regulations, 2024.

The validation system forms part of KRA’s larger strategy to embed AI and machine learning in revenue collection, a move expected to seal loopholes, curb tax evasion, and expand the tax base.
Officials say the adoption of AI-driven tax enforcement will enable KRA to identify discrepancies faster, reduce human error, and foster greater trust in the tax system.
The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to digital transformation in public finance management and aligns with Kenya’s vision of a modern, data-driven tax administration system.
