Boniface Muanga Mengo was elected as a member of the supervisory committee of the Univision Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Limited on Saturday, January 18, 2025. He garnered a total of 669 votes, defeating his two rivals, Ngyema Kimweli and Simon Masyuko.
Ngyema Kimweli secured second place with 568 votes, while Simon Masyuko came in third with 314 votes. The elections, held at the Kitui Multipurpose Development Training Institute, were for the Univision Sacco’s Kitui Central/Katulani/Matinyani/Kitui West/Lower Yatta Electoral Zone.
The society has a total of thirteen electoral zones. The 50-year-old Sacco is headquartered in Kitui Town. The Kitui Central District Cooperatives Officer, Dennis Muthoka, served as the presiding officer and officially announced the results. A total of 1,558 votes were cast, with seven of them being spoiled. Muthoka expressed his gratitude to the members for conducting peaceful elections.
All three candidates addressed the members after the results were announced. Kimweli and Masyuko accepted their defeat and congratulated Mengo on his victory.
In his speech after being declared the winner, Boniface Muanga Mengo thanked the members for electing him to the supervisory committee. He assured them of “correct service.” “I assure you that your property at the Sacco will be protected. As you know me, I am a man of no nonsense. I will make sure all goes well. I will do my role and I will not fear anyone. Under my supervisory leadership, the members will benefit. The Sacco will thrive,” he said.
On his part, Ngyema Kimweli stated: “I accept the defeat and I support Mengo. I want to thank my supporters for giving me 568 votes.”
The Univision Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Limited Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Cyrus Mutinda, the Kitui County Cooperatives Director, Sammy Kasanga Musomba, and the County Water and Irrigation Chief Officer, Bretta Mwangangi, also spoke at the event.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kitui County Executive Secretary, Simon Mutunga Nding’o, also addressed the function. He spoke about education in Kitui County: “Our Grade Nine pupils are in class. They are learning well,” Nding’o said. He lauded the “excellent performance” in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) national examination in Kitui County.

“The KCSE results have been released, and we are happy with the performance in our county. Our Form Four students performed excellently. We appreciate our teachers. They did great work,” he said.
Nding’o also discussed capitation: “We are asking the national government to provide our county’s schools with capitation. There is no capitation in our schools,” he said. Nding’o appealed to the Univision Sacco’s members to attend “our Sacco’s AGM on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Ithookwe Primary School.”
The KNUT Kitui County Chairman, Samuel Kathinuku, also addressed the occasion. He called upon the national government to provide food for Kitui County’s schoolchildren. “We have no food at this time because of the drought. We are appealing to the government to provide our county’s pupils with food, especially in the comprehensive schools in the area,” said Kathinuku, who is also a KNUT National Executive Council member.
“We in Kitui County highly appreciate the government for providing us with permanent Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers and interns,” he added.
The KNUT Kitui County Women’s Representative, Mwikali Katee, also spoke at the function, among others.
