Meru County Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia has officially launched a countywide maize seed distribution initiative under the county’s Food Security Program.

The exercise, which targets all wards, is aimed at promoting sustainable farming and enhancing food production across the region.

Speaking during a media briefing at his official residence, Governor Mutuma said the program would not only boost maize production but would also include the distribution of coffee and avocado seedlings.

He urged the youth to take farming seriously as a viable source of income.

“We are committed to empowering our farmers. In addition to maize seeds, we will also be distributing coffee and avocado trees to diversify agricultural production and create income opportunities,” said Governor Mutuma.

He also revealed plans to table a Miraa Bill aimed at protecting miraa farmers and streamlining its trade and transportation across the region.

“We are in the final stages of drafting the Miraa Bill. Once enacted, it will ensure miraa farmers and traders are protected and can maximize the benefits of the crop without harassment,” he noted.
