MPs change dates, venues of public hearings on Cooperatives Bill

The National Assembly has rescheduled the dates and venues for public hearing on the Cooperatives Bill 2024, (National Assembly Bill No. 7 of 2024) for some regions.

In an announcement seen by Sacco Review, the public hearing scheduled for May, 11 at Garrissa Social Hall in Garissa County has been postponed indefinitely due to unforeseen circumstances.

Consequently, the public hearing scheduled for May 8, 2024 at Baricho Social Hall in Kirinyaga County shall now be held at Kianyaga Youth Empowerment Centre at 10am on the same date.

The Co-operatives Bill hearings which kicked off on Monday 7 will end on May 11.

They include Siaya County where the hearing tookaplace on May 7 at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Social Hall and on May 8, the hearings will take place at Friends Resource Centre, Vihiga County. Then the following day, hearings will take place at Kericho Social Hall, Kericho County.

In Mombasa County, it will be held in Tononoka Social Hall on May 11 then in Machakos Social Hall in Machakos County it was conducted on Monday 6.

In Isiolo hearings takes place at Isiolo Town Catholic Church Social Hall in Isiolo on Thursday, May 9.

The bill, sponsored by Leader of Majority Party Kimani Ichung’wah was read first time on Tuesday April 9, 2024 and seeks to provide for socio- economic development in devolved system governance.

Consequently, the bill seeks to provide for matters relating to the promotion, constitution, registration and regulation of cooperatives and to give effect to Article 186 of the Fourth Schedule of the Constitution of Kenya.

Also, the bill as well roots for establishment of the office of the County Director of Cooperatives at the County Government level and to provide for inter-governmental cooperative relations.
