Muka Mukuu Farmers’ Cooperative Society has entered into negotiations with the National Museums of Kenya to transform the historic Macmillan Castle in Matungulu Sub‑county into a tourist attraction that could generate revenue for its members.

Speaking during the society’s Annual General Meeting, Chairman Dominic Nthwao said the discussions are progressing well but urged members to remain patient as the process involves multiple stages.

Nthwao stressed that the cooperative is not selling the iconic property, which sits on land owned by the society, but is seeking a partnership that will preserve the castle while unlocking its economic potential.

Nthwao said the National Museums is exploring partnerships to support the rehabilitation of the century‑old structure, which has long been considered one of the region’s most significant heritage sites.

The chairman also raised concern over the growing number of legal suits filed by members against the society, warning that the cases are draining resources that could otherwise be used to improve member welfare. He noted that the cooperative spends substantial amounts on legal fees, witness facilitation and other court‑related expenses.

“When members file cases in court, we have to spend money facilitating witnesses and paying lawyers. Those rushing to court every day are weakening the society financially,” he said.

Nthwao urged members to treat the cooperative as a family and avoid airing grievances in the media or resorting to litigation over issues that can be resolved internally. He encouraged the use of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to settle minor disputes and maintain unity within the society.
