The County Government of Busia, through the Department of Smart Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Blue Economy and Agribusiness on September 2, engaged cotton farmers and other stakeholders in Nambale to gather their views on the proposed construction of a cotton ginnery in the area.
Residents cite jobs and cost savings
Residents welcomed the proposal, saying a local ginnery would not only boost cotton production but also create jobs in the region.
Speaking at a public participation forum organised under the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP), farmers said they currently spend heavily buying cotton from growers and transporting it to the Muluanda ginnery for processing.

They noted that having a ginnery closer to them would significantly cut production costs and improve profitability.
County reaffirms support for cotton farmers
Chief Officer for Smart Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue Economy and Agribusiness, Elijah Mwaro, reaffirmed the county’s commitment to promoting cotton farming by creating an enabling environment for farmers and investors.
He assured farmers that the county has sufficient extension officers who will be available to provide technical support whenever needed.
