Nicco Movers Sacco resumes operation after suspension by NTSA

Nicco Movers Sacco will resume operations following an order from the Transport Licensing Appeals Board (TLAB) after being suspended by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) over the alleged death of a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student.

Eugine Mutuku was allegedly thrown out of a moving vehicle, registered under NICCO Sacco, without consideration, causing injuries to the student who later succumbed to death.

The Sacco filed an appeal through lawyer Danstan Omari on Thursday, June 25, alleging denial of a fair hearing by the TLAB board panel.

“The applicant has raised arguable grounds on the main appeal, including manifest errors on the face of the revocation letter, allegations of procedural unfairness, lack of fair hearing, disproportionality of the revocation over lesser sanctions, and possible,” the board noted.

The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Phenius Gitau, swore an affidavit on June 5, 2026, following an order by the NTSA requesting that they appear before the court on June 12 with registration documents and detailed information about the incident, expecting a fair hearing and judgment.

“It is therefore apparent that the decision to revoke the license had already been made before the Appellant was heard,” the affidavit reads.

Danstan Omari argued that the termination of Nicco Movers Sacco will leave hundreds of innocent employees jobless and result in a loss of more than Ksh 1 billion in the country’s economy, appealing for next hearing after a consultation with the management.

Two operations managers have been arrested and charged with misinformation and assisting the alleged suspects to escape.

The board further ordered the Sacco to fill a safety compliance strategy plan within seven days, handing over authority to NTSA upon the bridge of the stated terms. Next hearing is scheduled on July 2, 2026, at 3 p.m. for a final hearing.
