Njeru disputes KTDA chairmanship change, demands probe

KTDA Holding former Chairman Enos Njeru speaks during the 7th African Tea Convention and Exhibition in Nairobi.
  • Njeru disputes his replacement, alleging six directors were not notified of the meeting.
  • He questions the meeting’s legality and demands an independent investigation.
  • Njeru says he will oppose questionable payments and the use of farmers’ money for political campaigns.

Former KTDA Holdings chairman Enos Njeru has disputed the leadership change that replaced him with James Githinji Mwangi, saying six directors were not told a meeting would take place. He made the claim in a statement on his Facebook account, a day after the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) announced the change.

Njeru opened with a stern warning. “Enough is enough! KTDA cannot be held hostage by individual greed and selfish interests,” he wrote.

His main objection is to how the decision was made. He said the change reportedly came at a sitting held without six board members, who had neither been notified nor knew another meeting had been called. Njeru added that he had postponed the day’s meeting himself, and that most directors had agreed to the delay.

He then asked who convened the second meeting, who attended and under what authority it was held. He also wanted to know whether proper notices were issued and whether a quorum was formed. Njeru described the events as a serious breach of corporate governance and called for an immediate independent investigation.

Beyond the meeting, he criticised the direction of the agency. According to Njeru, the top office keeps changing not because of a genuine push to improve governance, but because some individuals are unhappy when their personal interests are not met.

At the same time, he made clear he would not yield to pressure. “I will not be anybody’s puppet,” he said. He added that he would sooner lose his seat than betray the farmers who trusted him with leadership.

Njeru also argued for deeper reform. “KTDA is not anybody’s personal property, and its Boardroom is not a private business where decisions can be manufactured to serve individual interests,” he stated. He said KTDA Holdings needs fundamental restructuring, and that its current structure must be questioned openly.

Finally, he listed what he says he will not do, whatever the consequences. He will not approve illegal or questionable payments, and he will not allow farmers’ money to fund political campaigns. He closed with a pledge to the growers. “Farmers first – always,” he said.

KTDA has described the change as the result of a board election. The claims made by Njeru have not been independently verified.
