NTSA summons Sacco officials after fatal Enterprise Road crash kills at least five

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has summoned officials of Risen Sacco following a deadly road traffic crash in Nairobi that killed at least five people and left 15 others nursing injuries of varying severity.

The incident allegedly occurred at approximately 8:00 PM on June 3, 2026, near the Dar es Salaam Roundabout opposite KCB Bank within Nairobi’s Industrial Area. The vehicle involved was a popular customised matatu known as “Detat,” associated with the Komarock 19C route and operated under Risen Sacco.

According to police, the matatu was allegedly travelling from the DT Dobie direction towards General Motors when an unidentified motorcycle allegedly emerged from Dakar Road and failed to give way. In an attempt to avoid a collision, the driver allegedly swerved, struck the central island kerb at the roundabout, lost control, and the vehicle overturned onto its left side. The motorcycle rider allegedly fled the scene immediately after the incident.

Eyewitness accounts, however, painted a more troubling picture. Several accounts allege the matatu was being driven recklessly, with at least six passengers reportedly hanging outside the vehicle as it allegedly performed dangerous swerving manoeuvres locally known as “manyoka.” Some of the casualties are believed to be among those who were allegedly clinging to the outside of the vehicle when it lost control.

The Kenya Red Cross Society confirmed the rapid deployment of its emergency response teams to the scene. “A mass casualty road traffic incident involving an overturned PSV has occurred along Enterprise Road in the Industrial Area, opposite Nairobi Prison. Kenya Red Cross emergency response teams are on the scene providing first aid and evacuation support to those affected,” the organisation stated.

In a statement issued on June 4, 2026, NTSA said it was saddened by the events. “The Authority is saddened by the fatal road traffic crash involving a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operated by Risen Sacco along Enterprise Road in Nairobi’s Industrial Area. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of those who lost their loved ones. We wish those injured a swift and full recovery,” the authority stated.

“We remain committed to thorough investigations, and we will take appropriate action,” NTSA stated, urging all PSV operators and crew members across the country to exercise maximum caution and strictly adhere to traffic regulations.

Authorities are also seeking to trace the motorcycle rider allegedly involved in the events leading up to the accident. The bodies of the deceased were transferred to Nairobi City Mortuary pending identification and post-mortem examinations.
