President William Ruto has defended the government’s livestock vaccination initiative, set to commence in January 2025.
Ruto said the initiative is a critical step toward improving animal health and boosting the livestock sector.
The program will see to the vaccination of 22 million cattle against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and 50 million sheep and goats against Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) across the Country.
The President Emphasized that this initiative is part of his administration’s broader agenda to enhance food security, promote sustainable agriculture, and uplift pastoralist communities who heavily rely on livestock for their livelihoods.
The vaccination campaign aims to address diseases that have been a persistent challenge in the livestock sector, potentially improving productivity and market value for farmers.

This large-scale vaccination program reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing agriculture and addressing challenges faced by Kenyan pastoralists.
It is expected to contribute to economic growth, especially in arid and semi-arid areas where livestock farming is a primary source of income.
