PSs to spearhead roll out of  Nyota Youth Programme in counties

The National Government has deployed all Principal Secretaries (PSs) to counties to spearhead the official rollout of the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (Nyota) programme

The Ksh5 billion initiative aimed at empowering vulnerable young Kenyans through start-up capital, training, and mentorship.

Each PS is expected to preside over the launch ceremonies in their counties as part of a Whole-of-Government Approach that promotes inclusivity and transparency in implementing the transformative job creation program.

“This initiative is in line with our commitment to uplift youth at the bottom of the economic pyramid by equipping them with financial support and skills to create sustainable livelihoods,” the Ministry of Cooperatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development said in a statement.

NYOTA project is a scaled-up version of the Kenya Youth Empowerment Program (KYEOP), and targets youths with business ideas.

Each successful applicant will receive Ksh50, 000, disbursed in two installments of ksh25,000 along with Business Development Services (BDS) training and mentorship.

Principal Secretary, State Department for Irrigation Ephantus Kimotho said the the Nyota programme is a flagship effort by the government to address youth unemployment, with a focus on marginalized and economically disadvantaged communities across Kenya.

Financed by the World Bank, NYOTA is a transformative multi-agency programme targeting over 820,000 vulnerable youth across all 1,450 wards, including refugee communities.

Kimotho who was speaking in Kajiado during the program sensitization forum- Kajiado Chapter, at Maasai Technical Training Institute said the initiative directly supports the Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) by expanding employment, boosting earnings, and strengthening a savings culture among the youth.

From 6th to 12th October 2025, the business support application window will reopen. Young people aged 18 to 29 (up to 35 for PWDs) are urged to  apply via the zero rated USSD 254#
