Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA) Chairman Fred Muteti has called for the establishment of cold storage facilities in major fruit-growing zones in Makueni County to curb post-harvest losses.
Muteti said farmers have been forced to sell highly perishable fruits such as pixie oranges, mangoes, avocados and oranges at throwaway prices due to lack of storage.
“Many fruits are perishable, leaving farmers with no option but to sell at a throwaway price for lack of option. There is a serious need for cold storage,” said Muteti.

Speaking at Nzakika Ward, Matiliku Market in Makueni Constituency during a women’s economic empowerment forum, Muteti said cold storage will allow farmers to preserve their produce and sell when prices are favourable, reducing waste and boosting earnings.
He said the government remains committed to driving development and serving the interests of local residents, and urged residents to support the development agenda to attract more projects and improve livelihoods.
