Young people in Siaya are gaining new opportunities to tap into the global digital economy through a community digital hub that offers practical technology training, internet access and links to remote work.

The Siaya Community Digital Hub, established by Siaya Senator and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader Dr Oburu Oginga and officially inaugurated by President William Ruto in March 2026, is equipping young people with skills designed to help them compete for jobs and business opportunities beyond Kenya.

The facility currently serves about 150 learners and has 200 computers, with its operations powered entirely by solar energy.

Its training programmes cover data analysis, digital marketing, basic cybersecurity, graphic design, video production, programming, web development and networking. Most courses run for six months, providing learners with an opportunity to develop practical skills relevant to the changing demands of the job market.

Beyond training, the hub provides free public internet, a business incubator and coworking spaces to support young people interested in building digital enterprises.

A key feature of the facility is its Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) centre, which connects digital workers to local and international clients, creating a pathway for young people to earn income through remote work without necessarily relocating to major cities.

The hub is described as the first community digital hub in Kenya to establish a BPO centre, positioning it as part of efforts to extend digitally enabled employment opportunities beyond urban centres.

Its learning programmes are also set to expand through Jaramogi Training College, a registered institution focused on artificial intelligence that is scheduled to launch in November 2026.

The initiative is further working with community-based organisations (CBOs), the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Siaya Branch and other partners to widen access to digital literacy and technology skills.

These partnerships are expected to strengthen community participation and introduce more people to digital opportunities as Kenya continues to expand its digital infrastructure under the Digital Superhighway initiative, which forms part of the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

The hub is also preparing to host the inaugural Nyanza Digital Summit from December 2 to 4, 2026, in collaboration with the Ministry and other stakeholders. The event is expected to provide a platform for discussions on digital skills, innovation and opportunities within the technology sector.

Meanwhile, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is supporting coordination among stakeholders to maintain security around the facility, safeguard critical digital infrastructure and promote cybersecurity awareness.

As digital work continues to create new possibilities for employment and entrepreneurship, the Siaya initiative seeks to bring those opportunities closer to communities, giving young people access to the skills, tools and connections needed to participate in the global economy.
