The Uasin Gishu County Government has intensified efforts to strengthen cooperative societies through a comprehensive capacity-building programme aimed at improving governance, promoting enterprise growth, and creating employment opportunities.
Speaking on Thursday June 25, during a training session attended by members of more than 40 boda boda Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOs), Governor Jonathan Bii said equipping cooperative leaders with sound management and governance skills is critical to building sustainable and resilient enterprises.
He said well-managed cooperatives have the potential to transform livelihoods, stimulate local economic growth, and create jobs, particularly for young people.
“The cooperative movement remains one of the strongest drivers of economic growth. By equipping SACCO leaders and members with the necessary skills, we are laying a firm foundation for wealth creation and improved livelihoods,” said Governor Bii.
The governor revealed that the county has so far disbursed more than Ksh700 million to cooperative societies to support enterprise development and enhance financial inclusion across the county.
He also highlighted measures taken by his administration to ease the cost of doing business for boda boda operators through reduced monthly sticker fees. Charges within Eldoret City were lowered from Ksh600 to Ksh400, while operators in rural areas now pay Ksh200, down from Ksh400.
