Umoja Wendani Housing tops the property segment at Ushirika Day Awards

Umoja Wendani Housing Co-operative emerged the top player in the recent Ushirika Day Awards Gala, taking first position in the Best Managed Housing Cooperative, Most Improved, and Best in Investments categories of recognitions.

The society, established in 2012 to cater for the housing needs of Umoja Wendani Sacco members, was also second in Best in Capitalization category of awards.

This was a follow-up on other awards they had amassed through the years, previously winning in the Best Managed Housing Cooperative category in 2022, and Second Best in Investment, second Best in Capitalization, Most Improved and Best Managed Housing Cooperative, all in 2019.

Umoja Wendani Housing Cooperative was established when members of Umoja Wendani Sacco, which has since rebranded to United Winners Sacco, felt the need to go into the land and housing segment of investment.

The housing society, whose membership is open to individuals, groups and corporate bodies, has a mission to help members to access affordable housing, as well as create wealth for them through finding investment opportunities that are viable and profitable. The current membership stands at more than 1,900.

Projects

Ongoing projects are 20-acre Kajiado Land Project in Kajiado County sub-divided into 1/4 and 1/8 acre plots. It is located 3 kilometres from the County Governor’s office, Kajiado, and adjacent to Esokota Primary School. These plots are suitable for both commercial and residential development.

In Machakos County, there are currently two ongoing projects of 50 acres each in Lukenya and Masinga. The Lukenya property is located 7 kilometres off Mombasa Road after Athi River at Lukenya Academy Junction opposite Kusyombunguo Hotel. This prime land consists of both residential and commercial plots subdivided into 50 by 100 plots in size. The road is earmarked for tarmacking to link Mombasa Road to Mitaboni Road (Koma – Machakos Road).

The Masinga land is located 27 kilometres off Kenol-Sagana-Marua Road after Kakuzi. The 50-acre land near Milaani Shopping Centre is subdivided into 50 by 100 and 100 by 100 plots. It is ideal for agricultural or residential development.

In total, the society has undertaken 8 major projects; 5 of which are sold out while 3 are currently ongoing. The completed projects are Malaa, Koma, Kinanie I, Kinanie II, and Mananja.

The society has flexible and affordable payment schedules, helping buyers and investors to prudently manage their finances and deal firmly with financial distress that ordinarily entangle investment plans.

The society’s board saw it wise to get a plot of its own at Umoja 1 K116 that it can develop into a modern storey building. The project will have both commercial and residential premises. This is another opportunity for members to get a return out of the Society’s diversified investments.

Umoja Wendani Housing Cooperative Society is now targeting a broader catchment of membership to enable it build enough financial muscle to increase its product base.

The focus is also on offering technical and support services for building and real estate development and management as it seeks partnerships with other financial institutions that can offer flexible funding solutions.

The idea is to make the society a one stop shop for home and property owners and real estate investors.
