Uphold integrity or perish, Coop leaders warned

Machakos County Chief Officer (CO) of Cooperatives Benedict Ngumbau has urged officials of cooperative societies to uphold integrity and abide by the Cooperative Societies Act to ensure the survival of their cooperatives.
Speaking after a visit to Komarock Housing Cooperative Society, the officer pointed out that most cooperatives fail due to mismanagement.
“Cooperatives should ensure they hold annual general meetings and conduct audits every six months,” he advised, adding that members are supposed to be briefed about what is going on to dispel doubts and fights being witnessed in some societies.
He disclosed that in a bid to boost coffee production, the county government funded three cooperative societies, and that more support is on the way.
“Kambusu, Mukuyuni and Kakuyuni cooperative societies were also given farm inputs, fertilizers and pesticides because we want to ensure our coffee farmers produce quality coffee.” He pointed out their activities.
