Urithi Sacco eyes 200pc growth in membership

By Joseph Mukubwa.

Urithi Premier Sacco (UPS) and Urithi Housing Co-operative Society officials have kicked off a massive recruitment drive that will see its membership grow by more than 200 per cent in three years time.
UPS Chairman, Ndung’u Thuku said officials from the sister companies had visited regions like Mombasa, Embu, Nakuru, Nairobi, Thika, Eldoret in addition to Nyeri in the attempt to realize this objective.
Thuku was speaking when the officials visited Nyeri where they educated members and prospective members on the institution, investment opportunities available at Urithi and benefits of saving and borrowing from the company.
Members were also enlightened on their role towards the Co-operatives growth and what to expect from the institutions, importance of investing in land, housing and real estate development and how members can benefit from the investment.
Urithi Housing, he said, has a big membership of over 18,000 making it impossible to hold a single gathering and communicate effectively and so decided to take the education in the regions.
Thuku said the Sacco has trained the members on borrowing so that they do not shy away from taking loans in order to grow financially.
“This will save them from exploitation by shylocks and other financial institutions that charge high interest rates,” he said.
The UPS, he said, was also keen on nurturing the saving culture among members and prospective members and especially the youth as many of them are yet to embrace the culture.
