West Kenya Sugar is set to build a Ksh4.2 billion ($32 million) sugar factory in Chesumei Sub-county, Nandi County, in a move that takes the Rai family’s milling business beyond its base in the western Kenya sugar belt.

The company, a subsidiary of the industrial conglomerate Rai Group, has designed the mill to crush 1,500 tonnes of sugarcane a day at the start. It can later double that to 3,000 tonnes.

For farmers in Nandi and the neighbouring areas, the plant would mean another buyer for their cane. West Kenya Sugar says it is working with local growers to develop sugarcane cultivation on more than 30,000 acres, an area that would supply the factory once it begins operating.

The Chesumei mill would also add to the group’s milling capacity. Factories under the Rai family umbrella would be able to process more than 18,000 tonnes of cane a day between them once the new plant is running.
