- Saccos face potential losses as KUSCCO’s liabilities far exceed recoverable assets.
- Millions held by individual Saccos could be at risk as liquidation begins.
- The recovery process will determine how much money creditors get back.
Savings and Credit Co-operative Society (SACCO) members could feel the financial fallout from KUSCCO’s collapse after the organisation was placed under voluntary liquidation on August 28, 2026.
KUSCCO owed creditors about Ksh 17 billion, but had recoverable assets estimated at only Ksh 5.4 billion, leaving a potential Ksh 11.6 billion recovery gap.
The former Sacco umbrella body provided financial and other services to Saccos, meaning several institutions had funds and investments tied up with KUSCCO.
A PwC forensic audit found serious financial irregularities, including alleged fraud, theft, unexplained withdrawals, conflicts of interest and manipulation of accounts amounting to about Ksh 9.3 billion. Several former officials were subsequently charged, with the cases still before the courts.

KUSCCO also faced mounting creditor claims, with about 292 court cases involving Ksh 6.48 billion filed against it.
Some Saccos had significant exposure. Balozi Sacco was reported to have about Ksh 437 million tied up with KUSCCO, followed by Mhasibu Sacco at Ksh 408 million, Kimisitu Sacco at Ksh 353 million and Qona Sacco at Ksh 314 million.
The liquidation means KUSCCO’s remaining assets will be recovered and distributed to creditors according to the applicable legal process. The final losses will depend on how much money can be recovered.
The affected Saccos are not being liquidated and can continue operating. However, unrecovered KUSCCO funds could put pressure on their financial performance and, in some cases, member returns.
Meanwhile, the new Kenya Federation of Saccos (KEFESCO) is being established to handle advocacy, training, research and consultancy. It will not assume KUSCCO’s debts.
The big question now is simple: how much of KUSCCO’s missing money can actually be recovered?
