ODM nominated MP for Youth Umulkheir Harun has urged boda boda riders to form Saccos to empower them to greater socio-economic heights.
Speaking during the end of a three month long drive to register boda boda operators in Garissa Township, Harun called on national leaders and public institutions to empower the riders who are key pillars to the country’s transport industry and economy.
The MP, who is the founder of Kesho Alliance who sponsored the sensitization workshop, noted that once empowered on financial literacy, no one can incite the riders to cause mayhem for money.
Through the drive, 3,000 riders from 161 groups have been registered
Garissa Township Sub county Police Commander James Ng’etich said the number amounts to 95 per cent of the total boda boda riders and that they will soon hit the 100 per cent mark.
He said the riders have been blamed for some of the criminal activities in the area and that at times, the riders themselves become victims of criminals posing as customers.
Ng’etich argued that since the registration process began three months ago, robbery cases and by boda boda riders have significantly reduced.
Garissa township boda boda chairman Maxwell Otieno echoed the MP’s sentiments, further arguing that the formation of a vibrant Sacco will go a long way in delivering financial independence amongst commercial riders.
He added that through the Sacco, they’ll be able to purchase their own motorbikes instead of hiring.
