Small-scale women traders during the Dada Mashinani Programme in Busia County

Busia County has successfully onboarded more than 10,000 small-scale women traders into the Dada Mashinani program, a transformative initiative designed to enhance entrepreneurship and financial literacy at the grassroots level.

The program is implemented through a partnership between the County Government, the Stanbic Bank Foundation, and Kenya Industrial Estates.

The initiative targets women at various stages of business development, with the goal of transitioning low-income and financially excluded women into formal lending systems.

Participants are equipped with financial literacy skills and linked to accessible credit facilities, enabling them to either start or expand their enterprises.

Speaking during the onboarding exercises held at Ganga, Bumbe, and Sisenye, County Chief Officer for Trade, Vincent Wanjala, underscored the county government’s commitment to promoting women’s participation in economic development.

“Beyond providing access to financing, we are training women on entrepreneurship and financial management to ensure sustainable business growth,” Wanjala said.

He encouraged the traders to join cooperatives, noting that collective organization enhances access to seed capital and strengthens bargaining power when seeking financial support.

Stanbic Bank Busia Branch Manager, highlighted the positive impact of the financial education component. “Empowering women economically not only improves household incomes but also contributes to broader economic growth,” she said.

Through the Dada Mashinani program, partners aim to nurture resilient women-led enterprises and stimulate inclusive economic development across Busia County.
