The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced new fuel prices, reducing the retail price of diesel by Ksh 10.06 while increasing kerosene prices by Ksh 38.60. The announcement comes amid a nationwide strike by public transport operators that has left four people dead, 348 arrested, and 30 others injured.
Despite EPRA’s announcement on fuel price adjustments, matatu operators have yet to call off the strike, which has now entered its second day. The industrial action has crippled transport services across the country, leaving many commuters stranded at bus stages as they wait for vehicles.
Transport operators argue that the high cost of fuel has forced them to increase fares beyond what many citizens can afford, making transportation both difficult and expensive.

On Tuesday morning, several roads were barricaded with stones and burning tyres, making it difficult for motorists and private vehicle owners to access their destinations. In some areas, residents were reportedly demanding payment from motorists in exchange for passage through blocked roads, taking advantage of the ongoing protests.
“We are unable to repay our loans due to the high fuel prices, which continue to cause losses unless we increase fares. We are requesting the government to intervene by reducing taxes and levies so that we can resume public transport operations,” said Albert Kargacha.
The strike has also disrupted businesses and education in the country. Several primary schools, secondary schools, and colleges have suspended classes until the strike is resolved. Some private schools and universities have shifted to online learning to minimise disruption and maintain students’ academic performance.
