Principal Secretary for the Department of Cooperatives Patrick Kilemi has paid a courtesy call to the offices of the German Cooperative and Raiffeisen Confederation (DGRV), a global cooperative apex organisation that supports the strengthening of governance, institutional capacity, financial oversight, and value chain development in cooperative movements.
According to the ministry’s social media post, the engagement was built on the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Kenya’s Ministry of Cooperatives and DGRV, with discussions focusing on deepening collaboration in key areas of the cooperative sector. Officials highlighted the need to improve governance and management systems, enhance supervisory frameworks for Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOs), and support capacity‑building initiatives to create stronger, more efficient cooperative institutions.
The meeting also underscored opportunities to advance value chain development to boost productivity, expand market access, and promote value addition for cooperative members. Stakeholders agreed that such efforts would not only strengthen the competitiveness of cooperatives but also ensure greater inclusion of women and youth in cooperative structures.

According to the Ministry, the courtesy call reflects ongoing efforts to consolidate partnerships that will help build a more resilient and inclusive cooperative sector.
The collaboration with DGRV is expected to accelerate reforms that safeguard members’ investments, modernise cooperative operations, and position Kenya’s cooperative movement as a driver of economic empowerment.
