Coffee farmers in Mt Kenya to be trained

Some 41,000 coffee farmers from Mt Kenya region are set to benefit from Sh70 million training programme initiated by Nestle Kenya to help boost production and quality of their produce.
The programme which will offer training and technical advice in the next three years also seeks to encourage participation of women and youth in coffee farming, according to Nestle Kenya Managing Director, Ciru Miring’u.
Speaking during the launch of the project at Kanjugu Cooperative Society in Embu County recently, Miring’u said 26,000 farmers and 9 Coffee Cooperative societies had already benefited in the first phase which ran from 2011 to 2014.
Miring’u said through their implementation partner Coffee Management Services; they have already recruited an additional 15,000 farmers and five coffee Cooperative societies to benefit from the second phase.
Embu Governor Martin Wambora said the county produced the best quality coffee in the world, adding that the County Government will provide the farmers with subsidized fertilizer and Batian coffee seedlings to help improve production.
