Co-operatives in Kirinyaga County have played a big role in enhancing economic empowerment among residents.
Kirinyaga County Director of Co-operatives, Edward Nyaga said more than half of Kirinyaga residents are co-operators, saying: “It is through societies that many households in the County are able to create wealth by embracing saving and prudent use of money”.
He urged Co-operatives leadership in the County to distance themselves from politics but concentrate in developing their organizations.
He said Co-operatives in Kirinyaga have continued to do well even at the national arena adding that last year the sector recorded a growth in members’ savings and membership.
“The Co-operative sector in Kenya is highly ranked in the continent and the world. This is a demonstration of good leadership in our societies,” he said.
Nyaga said County governments were working harmoniously with National Government to improve operating environment for Co-operatives.
He urged societies in the County to come-up with ways of ensuring their members join NHIF Scheme. “This will ensure members are able to get medical services without calling for fund drives to remain healthy to work. When members are healthy societies will also remain strong,” he said.
The County is home to reputed Bingwa and Ollin Saccos.
