- Rukuriri Tea Factory launches three value added tea brands
- New products target international markets and better farmer earnings
- Factory plans to boost local tea consumption from 5% to 30%
Rukuriri Tea Factory has penetrated the international market through value added tea, aiming to pay its farmers better in the coming years.
The Embu based factory launched three brands, Premium Kenyan Black CTC Tea, Premium Kenya Ginger Tea, and Premium Kenya Lemon Tea, all bearing the Mark of Origin after years of farmers producing quality green leaf.
Launching the products, KTDA National Chairman Enos Njeru said the innovation behind the value added brands follows farmers’ determination in plucking quality tea. Rukuriri factory is among those that have acquired tea bag packaging equipment to accelerate production of quality teas.
Njeru said the three brands carry the Mark of Origin, a strategy aimed at marketing local teas in international markets. “It is a prayer by the local tea farmers to President William Ruto to issue a directive to the public offices to consume local tea, as part of increasing consumption,” he said.

He pleaded with supermarkets, hotels, and public and private offices to stock local tea as part of the initiative. “The KTDA managed tea factories should embark on innovation of tea products and identifying the markets,” he said, adding that the same push will be extended to Mungania and Kathangariri tea factories in Embu County.
Factory Chairman Joseph Rwanjau said the factory will soon unveil its orthodox tea, which will be marketed both locally and internationally. “At Rukuriri, we are working towards increasing the local consumption of tea, with the expectation to hit 30 percent of the production up from five percent,” said Rwanjau.
